Why Oklahoma soil matters for clearing
Central Oklahoma sits on clay. The red and brown clay that makes up most of the topsoil in the OKC metro expands when it gets wet and contracts when it dries. That cycle affects everything from how roots grip the ground to how the finished grade holds after the lot is cleared. Ripping stumps out of clay is a different job than pulling them from sandy loam. The roots hold harder, the holes fill with water faster, and the backfill needs more compaction to stay level.
What gets removed
Trees, brush, undergrowth, old fencing, stumps, and anything else standing between the raw lot and the grade your builder needs. On a lot that has been sitting vacant, that also includes trash, old concrete, and sometimes abandoned structures. If a previous owner poured a slab for a shed or ran a concrete walkway that is now buried under six inches of dirt and weeds, it comes out during clearing.
Stumps: grind or pull
Grinding a stump leaves the root system underground and shaves the stump to several inches below grade. Pulling a stump extracts the root ball entirely and leaves a larger hole to fill. For a lot that is about to get a foundation poured on it, pulling is the usual choice because a buried root ball decays over years and creates a void. For a lot being cleared for a driveway or a yard, grinding is often enough.
The leveling step
Clearing a lot and leveling it are two different jobs. Clearing gets rid of what is on the surface. Leveling shapes the ground underneath. For a construction pad, the builder needs a specific grade, usually sloping away from where the foundation will sit so water drains rather than pools. In Oklahoma, getting this right the first time matters more than in drier climates. Water that sits against a foundation on clay soil has nowhere to go, and clay that stays wet expands against the concrete.
Equipment for the job
A Bobcat handles most residential and small commercial lots. It is compact enough to work between property lines and powerful enough to pull stumps and push brush piles. Larger lots or lots with mature hardwoods sometimes need a full-size excavator for the tree removal and the Bobcat for finish grading. Timing and weather
The best clearing weather in Oklahoma is late fall through early spring, when the ground is firm but not frozen. Summer work is fine if the lot is not soaked from a recent storm. The worst window is the 48 hours after a heavy rain on clay ground. Everything that moves cuts ruts, and ruts in clay take real effort to fix.
