The signs a pool has run its course
Oklahoma summers make pools appealing. Oklahoma winters make them expensive. A concrete pool that cracked over a freeze-thaw cycle costs thousands to patch, and a vinyl liner that has been replaced twice starts to feel like a subscription. When the maintenance budget exceeds the number of months anyone actually swims, the math has already answered the question.
Other triggers: a buyer's inspection flags the pool as a liability, the HOA changes its fencing requirements, or the homeowner simply wants the yard space for something else. All of those are practical, not dramatic.
Full removal versus partial fill
A full removal means the shell comes out. The Bobcat breaks the concrete, a dump truck hauls it, and the hole gets backfilled with clean soil, compacted in lifts so it does not settle into a sinkhole two years later. Partial fill leaves part of the old shell in the ground with holes punched through the bottom for drainage. Full removal costs more but leaves no buried concrete for a future owner to discover during a foundation dig.
In Oklahoma City, full removal is the more common choice. The clay soil here can trap water above buried concrete, and that trapped water does exactly what you would expect during a freeze.
What happens to the surrounding concrete
Pool decks, coping, and the concrete pad around the equipment are part of the job. Leaving a ring of patio concrete around a filled hole looks unfinished and creates trip-hazard edges as the fill settles unevenly against it. Permits and inspections
Whether you need a demolition permit depends on your city and county. Oklahoma City requires one for most residential demolition work. Edmond has its own process. How long pool removal takes
A standard residential pool, concrete or vinyl, takes two to four days from first cut to final grade. Larger pools, pools with extensive decking, or pools built into slopes take longer. Weather matters too. Oklahoma's red clay turns into a different material when it is wet, and working it in that condition compacts poorly.
What the yard looks like after
The finished grade is level and compacted. It will settle slightly over the first few months, especially through the first rain season. Most homeowners seed or sod the area after that initial settlement. The soil that goes back in is clean fill, not the old pool debris.
